 INSIGHTS & JOY

A business newsletter with Pizzazz!

"We help leaders become better marketers
using a holistic business approach!"

January 2005

We're off on a brand new adventure. People call it Year 2005. It is a time for enthusiasm and hope. A time to accelerate our levels of activity! The horizon beckons, promising new opportunities, greater knowledge, and constant change. The human spirit's thirst for a better life continues to conquer tsunamis and terrorist threats around the globe. Business organizations ebb and flow. The once-mighty AT&T has been consumed by SBC (one of AT&T's earlier spin-offs) as Exxon reports big profits and Google goes public. The U.S. economy is forecast to grow by 3.2% this year and by another 3.3% in 2006. Are you ready for some football?

Some thoughts on leadership

Management is the art of getting three men to do three men’s work. Leadership is getting three men to do four men’s work.

Leadership is the art of mixing vision, direction, resources, knowledge, experience, judgement, and energy in proper measure to create a better result.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

Great leaders have a worthy vision, communicate that vision to others, and organize great effort to turn their vision into reality.

Leadership involves remembering past mistakes, an analysis of today’s achievements, and a well-grounded imagination in visualizing the opportunities of the future.

The secret of all victory lies in the organization of the nonobvious. To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe. Anatole France

Big shots are little shots who kept shooting. Christopher Morley

In every triumph there’s a lot of try. Frank Tyger

If you cry "forward," you must without fail make plain in what direction to go. Anton Chekhov

Avoid putting yourself before others and you can become a leader among men. Lao-tzu

It is energy—the central element of which is will—that produces the miracles of enthusiasm in all ages. Everywhere it is the mainspring of what is called force of character and the sustaining power of all great action. Samuel Smiles

Freedom Works, an essay

The world seems to be made up of two very different types of people - those who have faith and those who don't.  We are not necessarily talking about religion, although this statement clearly applies.  What we are referring to is faith, or lack of it, in man's ability to lift himself up when given the freedom to do so.

Those who have faith believe that men and women will always use every tool at their disposal to better their lot in life, but in an environment of freedom their odds of success rise dramatically.  And through a process of self-interested innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, they benefit society as a whole.  This group believes in democracy and in a government that establishes and enforces the "rules of the road," but it also realizes that government can go too far.  As a result, it values limits on the size and scope of government and believes that the market provides its own checks and balances through competition.

Those who lack faith in this process worry that people are inherently evil and must be controlled (by government), lest self-interest run amok and ruin the world for everyone.  Progressive taxation and redistribution of wealth are two legislative staples of those who believe government must engineer a fair and equitable world.  Lately, Environmentalism and Corporate Social Responsibility have become the battle cry for this group and it appears that they have made the U.S. a poster-boy for what is wrong with freedom.

While it is impossible to deal with all of these issues in a short essay, the past two years are clear evidence that those who have faith in their fellow man are onto something.  The U.S. economy has surged following mid-2003 tax cuts that increased the after-tax rewards for taking risk, and unemployment has fallen to 5.4%.  In much of Western Europe, real GDP growth is less than 2.0%, while unemployment is north of 10%.  Government in the U.S., while not perfect, is clearly less of a burden than in Europe.

The elections in Iraq were a wild success, and the purple-ink-stained finger will go down in history as a brave statement of freedom.  While there is still a long road to travel, the Iraqi election is a huge step toward a more peaceful and less tyrannical world.

The democratic-capitalist system is not perfect, because people are not perfect.  But it has proven itself time and time again.  When people are free, the entrepreneurial spirit exerts itself, living standards improve and resources to deal with crisis are created.  Having faith in people is the correct course, because freedom works.

Smiles make the day!
Begin the year with enthusiasm!

If it were as easy to arouse enthusiasm as it is suspicion, just think what could be accomplished!

Years wrinkle the skin, but lack of enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Genius is often nothing more than inflamed enthusiasm!

Enthusiasm is contagious - and so is the lack of it!

Enthusiasm is a powerful engine, but it needs an intelligent driver steering.

Enthusiasm is nothing but normal activity with a tin can tied to its tail!

Some folks get into the Sea of Success on a wave of enthusiasm.

Keep your feet on the ground - and keep them moving!

So long, Johnny.

An important part of marketing is making your product or service easy to buy. Study your processes and every interaction with customers. Look for ways to make buying easier for customers.

Good marketing plans implemented with gusto usually do better than brilliant plans poorly executed.

P.S. Ninety-five percent of our engagements originate as a referral from helpful people like you! If you know someone who:

Wants to develop a more productive marketing program, or

Needs help building and implementing an effective operational business plan,

I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the situation with you.

Our ideal client is a business owner or CEO between 30 and 60+ years old. Usually with a financial, engineering, or production background. Who is often impatient, and interested in improving company performance. Comes alive when you ask, "How's business?" He, or she, is practical but also enjoys the finer things in life.
So, you may see my ideal client driving a Lexus or SUV to Neiman Marcus...and to Sam's Club. Who do you know that fits this description?

A client speaks:  "You have been of significant help in two of my businesses in the past and I will continue to call on you in the future."
