 INSIGHTS & JOY

A business newsletter with Pizzazz!

"We help leaders become better marketers
using a holistic business approach!"

December 2005

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Joyous New Year!

It wont be long now! Holiday greetings, parties, more big meals, gift exchanges, such a busy time of year. Don't forget to carve out some time to be with your family and closest friends.

The holiday 'lull' is also a great time to take stock of your business accomplishments and set some goals for 2006. It's a time to 'think big' and start the year at a fast pace. Speaking of thinking big, I'll end this year's Insights with something truly intergalactic. A recent forum almost blew my mind, so I will give you a brief summary of what I heard.

Marketing Facets - The Market Focused Guide to Company Analysis

Shocking futuristic ideas now being explored!

I attended a recent session of the M.I.T. Forum, held on the University of Texas at Dallas campus. The topic was innovation and it peaked my curiosity. Boy, was I in for a shock!
I learned that real people work on some pretty far out innovations at M.I.T. and at U.T.D. Innovations like carbon nanotubes, space elevators, and spray-on space suits! Let me take one at a time.

Carbon nanotube technology creates a very light material that is at least 70 time stronger than the strongest steel. Somehow, carbon atoms are made to wrap around themselves producing a useful material that can be used to manufacture many products. For instance, some of the bicycle frames used in this year's Tour de France race were made of Carbon Nanotube (CN) material. I picked up a length of a bike frame about three feet long that weighed about as much as a first class letter! A Dallas company, Zyvex Corporation, now makes CN materials that you will soon see used for a new generation of Ping and Callaway golf club shafts and competition baseball bats. How about dent-resistant CN car bodies, or armored tanks and personnel carriers light enough to be hovercraft? Other space age applications for CN material are practically limitless, as you will soon hear.

A space elevator? How's this for innovation...Dr. Bradley C. Edwards, founder of Carbon Designs, visualizes an elevator into space. Almost like Jack and the Beanstalk, Dr. Edward's space elevator would be a strip of carbon nanotube material about three feet wide stretching 62,000 miles through the clouds and into space! Payloads, that today must be launched using powerful rockets at tremendous cost, could be placed on the CN ribbon. A laser beam focused on the base of the load would provide power to DC motors that would propel the payload up the ribbon elevator and into space. Edwards claims his space elevator would drastically reduce the cost of space exploration and space travel. Does this sound like science fiction? Dr. Edwards is busy lining up funding for his space elevator and now estimates that the device could be operational in another 15 years! Don't ask me how the CN ribbon will be kept straight. There may be some additional challenges to overcome, but just the thought of such an innovation boggles my mind.

Spray-on space suits may be the answer to the problem of maintaining one G of pressure on astronaut's bodies during a three-year trip to Mars. Dr. Dava Newman, a professor at M.I.T. works with N.A.S.A. on space suit design. She has shown that muscles weaken and atrophy in space unless you maintain pressure on the body and provide the means of exercising muscles. Space travel also harms bone density and structure unless the body works against pressure. Today's space suits are rather unwieldy, so work continues to find the right combination of materials and devices to help astronauts cope with the rigors of lengthy trips into space. Electrical and mechanical devices, along with plastics and other materials are under examination now. Dr. Newman even suggests that the answer may eventually be 'spray-on' space suits that work to maintain body health. Don't ask me how you would handle common human needs like eating, drinking, and sanitation. Thinking big comes first, solving the inevitable hurdles comes next!

Given space elevators and spray-on space suits, maybe our grandchildren will be able to celebrate the holidays on the Moon, with their powerful communication and computing array neatly tucked inside an earlobe and mentally operated. What a world of wonders! What's else can we wish for? Peace in the Middle East and hydrogen-powered vehicles? Perhaps neither is that far-fetched anymore.

Smiles make the day!
As the year 2005 winds down, here are ten thoughts to ponder:

10 - Life is sexually transmitted.

9 - Good health is merely the slowest way to die.

8 - Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich!

7 - Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

6 - Some people are like a Slinky.....not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

5 - Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.

4 - All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

3 - Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut save you thirty cents?

2 - In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
    -------

And the Number 1 thought for 2005 -

We know exactly where one cow with mad-cow disease is located among the millions and millions of cows in America, and exactly where she came from. But we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of illegal immigrants and terrorists are located. Maybe we should put the Department of Agriculture in charge of immigration!

$ Million Marketing Tips

TIP: Why do people buy something familiar rather than a potentially better choice? Buyers need to feel they are in control and that their risk level is low. Risk and vulnerability are buyer concerns even if they remain unstated.

TIP: Invest in market research to learn more about customers. In many cases, your biggest competitors are customer indifference and your own ignorance of market realities!

Amazing facts!

The number one cause of daytime fatigue is a lack of water. Then, there's lack of sleep or a boring job!

Lettuce is part of the sunflower family of plants!

Looking forward to that New Year's kiss? Beeswax and fish scales are common lipstick ingredients!

The Earth's water supply is 97% salt water, 2% frozen water, and 1% fresh water. Careful how you use it!

The Mayan Indians invented our symbol for the number zero.

Would you rather be an alligator or a crocodile? Alligators live about 50 years, crocodiles can live to be 100 or more.

Marketing Facets - The Market-focused Guide to Company Analysis

Marketing Facets - The Market-focused Guide to Company Analysis. Marketing Facets is a practical
resource for those involved in determining the current health of a company and gauging its future prospects. I designed my 103-page guidebook
to be a supplement to other evaluation procedures and information normally gathered during a thorough due diligence or
business valuation process. The workbook takes a holistic approach, assembling facts and management assumptions in key areas to help
analysts form and support conclusions.

Marketing Facets is a valuable resource to private investment fund managers, individual investors, venture capital specialists, investment banks,
and valuation specialists. Marketing Facets can also serve as a guide for C-level executives who wish to perform their own company analysis
as part of normal business planning, or in advance of efforts to refinance, acquire or divest.

Marketing Facets is available in electronic form via the Internet, on CD/ROM, or in print with a ring binder.
> Electronic in MS Word .doc or Adobe .pdf format via the Internet @ $79.95

P.S. Ninety-five percent of our engagements originate as a referral from helpful people like you! If you know someone who:

> Wants to develop a more productive marketing program, or
> Needs help building and implementing an effective operational business plan,

I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the situation with you.

Our ideal client is a business owner or CEO between 30 and 60+ years old. Usually with a financial, engineering, or production background.
Who is often impatient, and interested in improving company performance.
Comes alive
when you ask, "How's business?" He, or she, is practical
but also enjoys the finer things in life. So, you may see my ideal client driving a Lexus or SUV to Neiman Marcus...and to Sam's Club.
Who do you know that fits this description?

A client speaks:  "You have been of significant help in two of my businesses in the past and I will continue to call on you in the future."
